How to Choose the Right Rug Size for Every Room

The living room is where rug sizing matters most. A rug that’s too small makes the space feel disjointed, while the right size ties your furniture together and creates a cohesive, inviting zone.

Standard 3-Seater Sofa Layout: Choose a 240x330cm rug. This allows all furniture legs to sit on the rug, or at minimum, the front legs of your sofa and armchairs. This is the most popular living room rug size in Australia.

Large Open-Plan Spaces: For open-plan homes — the dominant layout in modern Australian architecture — a 270x360cm or 300x400cm rug defines the lounge area without overwhelming the space. Use the rug to visually separate living from dining zones.

Compact Apartments: A 160x230cm or 200x290cm rug works well in smaller living rooms. Place the front legs of your sofa on the rug and leave 20-30cm between the rug edge and walls for a balanced look.

The Golden Rule: Always leave 30-45cm of exposed floor between the rug edge and walls. This frames the rug and makes the room feel larger. In very large rooms, you can increase this to 60cm.

In the bedroom, your rug should create a soft landing for your feet each morning. The placement matters as much as the size — getting it right transforms the feel of your entire room.

Queen Bed: A 200x290cm rug placed horizontally under the bottom two-thirds of the bed extends about 60cm on each side. This ensures your feet land on soft fibres whether you get out on the left or right.

King Bed: Step up to a 240x340cm rug for balanced proportions. With a king bed, a smaller rug can look awkward — the extra width ensures the rug extends past the bedside tables for a cohesive look.

Single Bed / Kids Room: A 120x170cm or 160x230cm rug placed beside the bed or centred in the room works well. For children’s bedrooms, ensure the rug covers the primary play area.

Placement Tips: Position the rug so it extends equally on both sides of the bed, with roughly 20-30cm peeking out at the foot. You can also place two runner rugs (80x200cm) on either side of the bed for a symmetrical look.

Dining rugs need to be large enough that chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. This is the most common sizing mistake — underestimating how far dining chairs extend from the table.

4-Seater Table (120cm round or square): A 200x200cm or 200x290cm rug provides adequate chair space. Measure with chairs pulled out to seated position and add 20cm clearance on all sides.

6-Seater Rectangular Table (180cm long): You’ll need at least a 240x330cm rug. This gives 75cm of rug beyond the table edge on the long sides — enough for chairs to sit fully on the rug when pulled back.

8-Seater Table (220cm+ long): A 270x360cm or 300x400cm rug is recommended. For large Australian dining tables that seat 8-10 people, don’t compromise on rug size — it’s better to go slightly larger than too small.

Round Tables: Use a round or square rug. The rug should extend at least 60cm beyond the table edge in all directions. For a 120cm round table, a 240cm round rug is the minimum.

Pro Tip: Before buying, tape the rug dimensions on your floor using painter’s tape. Pull out your chairs and sit in them to verify the rug is large enough. This simple test prevents expensive mistakes.

Hallways and entries are high-traffic zones that benefit enormously from runners. The right runner protects your floors, adds warmth, and creates a welcoming first impression.

Standard Hallways: An 80x300cm runner is the most common size for Australian hallways. Leave 10-15cm of floor exposed on each side. For longer hallways, use two runners with a small gap between them rather than one oversized piece.

Wide Hallways: If your hallway is wider than 120cm, consider a 100x300cm or even 120x300cm runner for better proportions. The runner should be approximately two-thirds the width of the hallway.

Entry Foyers: A 120x170cm or 160x230cm rug in the entry creates a transition zone. Choose durable, easy-clean materials — this is where muddy boots and sandy feet make first contact. Flatweave or low-pile synthetics are ideal.

Stairways: Stair runners typically need to be 65-75cm wide. Measure the full length of your staircase including landings. Professional installation is recommended for stair runners to ensure safety.
